June 2, 2020 MESSAGE FROM MAYOR & COUNCIL - CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)

Good afternoon I am Mayor Paul Medany on behalf of Deptford Township Council, today is June 2nd, 2020. We have been doing these updates to help and provide information on our pandemic and economic crisis.

These videos are short, so we must get to our points quickly.

As local leaders, we recognize that we must listen and take action on our level to help facilitate necessary changes and support the rights of our citizens.

In the short time we have for this video we must address the horrific death of Mr. George Floyd.

We all share the shock and anger surrounding the actions of the officers involved. What we have done in Deptford, is to work on our commitment to our community.

Every person in Deptford has a voice and as your local elected officials we’re listening.

Peaceful protest are the right and the voice of every citizen who recognizes that change must happen.

If you choose to peacefully protest, please use safety precautions, wear a mask, keep a safe distance and please stay safe.

We have worked tirelessly here in Deptford to bring the community together with Events, and partnerships. United we stand, divided we fall.  We cannot fail, and we cannot fall.

Now we must remember we are in the mist of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis.

COVID-19 patients in Deptford as of today are at 509, Gloucester County has 2,260, New Jersey has 161,545.

So, I always say ask questions, get information and facts then give your opinion on the subject.

Here’s my question:

Why are local stores not allowed to open with appropriate safeguards?

We have done everything we can at this level to help you keep safe.  Why will two weeks from now be different from today?

Well it will not be. The virus that causes this disease will still be here.

Don’t make the mistake of dropping your safeguards from this virus. They are not that difficult to follow.

Wear a mask, don’t touch your face, wash your hands and stay apart from others, keep physical distance.

We have said over and over the virus needs to get in to your body to make you sick. Don’t let it get into your body by following these rules.

Most of them are good rules to follow normally.

You will see around Deptford this past week, we have put up “Thank You Deptford” signs. That is an effort on Township Council’s behalf to say thank you to the residents for working together during this pandemic, during this economic crisis, of all the crises we face, we can’t say thank you enough.

We must get people back to work, stores open and we must keep each other safe while doing it, following those guidelines that we keep repeatedly speaking about.

We have been working together as a nation during this pandemic, we need to take that and work together to fix our broken path to treating every single person equally and to realize we are not all the same, but we must be treated the same.

Thank you, Deptford. Please stay safe.
